Just as the Regional Chairman of the ANC makes demands, then the “independent” State Minister Xingwana jumps and silently signs this past Friday a Government notice changing 155 years of history. The Minister and the ANC have not learnt their lessons form the Louis Trichardt debacle where the Appeal court reversed a similar ill advised name change.
The ANC remains oblivious to the demands and needs of the residents in Pretoria. They continue to make poor decisions to distract their lack of performance and waste residents money on eager boosting frivolties. The DA and many other community organisations have long pointed out that insufficient public participation in the proposal for the change of Pretoria’s name took place. Not only was the participation negligible, outdated and superficial so too has the ANC failed to attempt to reconcile the various cultural interests groups and history . Across the spectrum of the over 2.4 million residents of Pretoria, communities are dissatisfied by the calls from certain factions in the ANC to change the name of the city.
The DA will work with residents and other community organisations to fight for the rights of the majority of the Pretoria residents to retain the name of Pretoria and prevent the fruitless and wasteful expenditure which such a name change will result in. A win-win opportunity to combine all interest groups views in the proposed naming of Pretoria has been missed and an arguably fictitious personality’s name immortalised to prove the point that the ANC are currently in power and will do as they please despite logic and the views of the residents.
